You’d have been forgiven for thinking Stonehaven were up against it this past weekend, facing Juniors SuperLeague leaders following a run of defeats, but that wasn’t quite the way it worked out.
Martyn Rollo’s side held Montrose Roselea to a 1-1 draw at Glenury park, putting their losing streak behind them.
The result doesn’t affect Stoney’s league position – they still sit third bottom, in the relegation playoff – although getting such a result against the table toppers can certainly give a confidence boost.
It’s an away game for Stoney this coming Saturday; they’ll be facing off with eighth placed Hall Russell United. United are only four points ahead, with the league remaining to be incredibly tight.
The weather was playing havoc with the fixtures at Amateur level this weekend, although only one Mearns side was affected. Bervie Caledonian’s second round tie in the Kintore Trophy Centre Association Trophy against Westdyke was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The cup game is set to be attempted again this weekend. Although, adverse weather continuing this week suggests the game could face the same fate.
Stonehaven Athletic faced a difficult challenge as they battled Woodside who currently sit second in the Premier Divison. The Division Two North side gave it their all but were eventually defeated 2-0 to be knocked out of the Rainbow City Taxi’s Aberdeen FC Trophy.
The side’s Facebook page was full of praise for the underdog’s performance:
“This was a solid and disciplined performance from the boys today and although the result went against us, there were a lot of positives to take against the reigning Premier League champions.”
“The focus for us now goes back to the league and if we can take a performance like that the rest of the season should bode well for us.”
Cowie Thistle and Ac Mill Inn both had their games in the Kintore Trophy Centre Association Trophy go ahead, despite the weather. Although, they might have wished the games hadn’t gone ahead.
Both sides were defeated, Cowie beaten 4-2 at home against Echt and Inn 2-0 away from home against Insch.
St Laurence will be back in action this Saturday. The Laurencekirk side host Cove Thistle in their Premier Division fixture.
Meanwhile, Stonehaven Athletic host Blackburn at Jim Glennie Park.
